Our plan for knysna is built around three emphases
In Matthew 28:19, Jesus says, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you..." Counseling, in essence is discipleship. It may be focused on a particular sin issue, but at its heart, Biblical Counseling is discipleship! Throughout the course of his almost 20 years in pastoral ministry, Herb has received both experience and training in biblical counseling. His training has included attending the CCEF (Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation) National Conference three times, and taking the first 3 tracks of The Biblical Counseling Training Conference (2013-2015) in LaFayette, IN. He is also pursuing certification with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). As to experience, Herb has counseled many people during his pastoral ministry. Their problems have been as widely varied as possible, from addictions to anger and from anxiety to anorexia.
Janet's background in social work, and her love for people, mean that she will be a valuable partner in ministering to ladies as the ministry of biblical counseling is established in South Africa. Together Herb and Janet have counseled engaged couples and families in crisis. Since sin problems are common to humanity, Herb and Janet anticipate dealing with many of the same problems in South Africa that they have in Canada!
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, "...I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." With this in mind, Herb and Janet hope to join in that work of seeing the body of Christ grow around the world. Upon arriving in Knysna, they will be initially associated with the already started Lagoonside Baptist Church before finding a neighborhood in which to start another church. Through their verbal witness to their neighbors and countless interactions with people through which people in their community they intend to show the love of Christ, Herb and Janet and their kids are trusting that God will use them to begin a congregation of like minded believers.
However long it takes, Herb and Janet are committed to the establishing of another local church in Knysna, South Africa. They are firmly convinced that God's plan for this age is the prospering of the local Church as a means to show God's glory throughout the earth (Eph.1:13-15).
Herb and Janet realize that "except the Lord build a house, they labor in vain that build it... (Ps.127:1)" and so they request your prayers in this endeavor, seeking to honor the Lord as He directs their church planting efforts!
In Titus 1:9, Paul says this regarding pastors, "He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it." To this end, Herb plans to be involved in the education of South African's in theological studies for both the pastor's and laymen in South African churches. Herb received a Bachelor of Arts in Youth ministries from NIU (Northland International University), in Dunbar, WI and a Master of Divinity Degree from CBTS (Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary) in Lansdale, PA. This educational background will serve as a foundation for his teaching ministry.
During his time in pastoral ministry, Herb taught a number of courses for EBBI (Emmanuel Baptist Bible Institute). These courses include New Testament Survey, Church Doctrine and Administration, Baptist Distinctives, Old Testament Historical Books and Genesis. The Lord used this teaching experience to prepare Herb for the teaching ministry that awaits him in South Africa.
Janet will use her background as a mother and as a teacher to instruct the ladies and the children in local church ministry, in addition to discipling ladies in her own home.
