Our Story

Herb and Jan

Janet grew up in Topsail, Newfoundland and spent most of her childhood years as a student at First Baptist Academy. Upon graduation, she went to a Christian university in the Southern USA for a year and a half and studied elementary education. After her experience there, Janet returned home and attended the provincial university in Newfoundland, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Social work and a Bachelor's degree in Russian and Linguistics. She worked for a couple of years as a Child Protection Social Worker for the Province of Newfoundland, before leaving her job to raise her own family!

Herb grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick. He spent his grade school years at a variety of public schools throughout the city. After graduation, Herb went to the USA to Bible College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Ministries. Upon graduation, Herb accepted the call to be the youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. It was during this time as Youth Pastor that Herb and Janet met and fell in love. Herb and Janet have been married since 1997!

In 1999, Herb and Janet left Newfoundland so Herb could receive more education. In 2001, after finishing two years of Seminary, Herb accepted the call to pastor his home church in Saint John. For the past 14 years he has served as the pastor of that church. It was during this time that he completed his Master of Divinity degree (2011) through live video conferencing and block courses.

After traveling to the field of South Africa in August 2014, Herb and Janet began to pray about God's leading. In June of 2015, they announced to the church family their intention to begin preparations to pursue God's leading to the field of South Africa!
